Empowering Refugees Through Cooking Workshops and Sustainable Skills, in Saint-Gaudens (France)

In a world marked by conflict and displacement, the need for initiatives that foster integration and skill development for refugees cannot be overstated. The workshops initiated by the Erasmus+ project MILMET and conducted by Bucovina Institute precisely exemplify these types of initiatives, and their profound influence in Suceava (Romania) is undeniable.
The language workshops for refugees, organised in the spring of 2023 with women and youngsters from Ukraine, consisted in practical worksheets in the field of wood recycling and furniture reconditioning. This focus not only equipped refugees with essential linguistic skills but also imparted practical knowledge that can help to meaningful employment and contribute to ecological sustainability.
Bucovina Institute’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment and fostering positive integration experiences is exemplified through the MILMET project. By offering language workshops, the initiative addresses a fundamental barrier faced by refugees – the language barrier. Effective communication is key to building connections and seeking employment opportunities in a new country. These workshops not only help participants learn the local language but also encourage cultural exchange and understanding among participants and the local community.
The choice of wood recycling and furniture reconditioning as the focal point of skill development is impactful. By teaching refugees how to salvage, repurpose, and recondition wood and furniture, the MILMET project not only empowers participants to realise creative and functional pieces, but also contributes to reducing waste and promoting a circular economy. This interplay between personal skill development and ecological responsibility showcases the project’s holistic approach to integration and empowerment.
